Evidence Based Medicine (EBM)

Resources and Information related to the field and practice of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM)

If you have found that the evidence is valid, significant, and generalizable to your patient, you must decide whether and how to apply the findings to your patient's care. We must consider how the population, intervention/treatments can be generalized to your specific patient.

This step is arguably the most challenging because you must combine the evidence and your clinical knowledge with the patients' values and considerations.  It is within this step that you are making the clinical decision.

ASK YOURSELF

Prior to applying your clinical decision, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Were the study patients similar to your population of interest? Do the results apply to your patient?
  • Were all clinically important outcomes considered and are the results clinically important?
  • Are the likely treatment benefits worth the potential harm and/or cost?
  • Can this practice be implemented in this healthcare setting?
  • What are your patients' values and preferences?
  • How can you help your patient make a decision?
