Literary Prizes and Awards for Children's Literature

Children's Literature Awards

Caldecott Medal
Awarded by the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
Coretta Scott King Book Awards
Honors books by authors of African descent whose books promte an understanding of the American Dream.
Ezra Jack Keats Book Award
Known collectively as the Ezra Jack Keats Book Award, the New Writer Award was established in 1985 and the New Illustrator Award in 2001 to recognize and encourage emerging talent in the field of children’s books.

It is awarded at the Fay B. Kaigler Children's Book Festival at Univ. of Southern Mississippi.
Jane Addams Children's Book Awards
Books that promote the casuse of peace, social justice, world communtiy and the equality of the sexes and all races.
Kate Greenway Award
Award given to a distinguished illustration in a book for children.
Children's Literature Legacy Award
Award honors an author or illustrator whose books, published in the United States, have made, over a period years, a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children.
Magnolia Book Award
The Magnolia Book Awards are given annually to the book voted by the children and teens of Mississippi as their favorite in four age categories. The purpose of the Magnolia Book Awards is to introduce Mississippi children and teens to current literature and to instill a love of reading.
NCTE Orbis Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children
Established as an annual award for promoting and recognizing excellence in the writing of nonfiction for children.
Newbery Award
The most distinguished book contribution to American literature for children.
Pura Belpré Award
This award is presented to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.
Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award
Awarded annually to the author (including co-authors or author-illustrators) of the most distinguished informational book published in English during the preceding year.
