Political Science: Videos & Political Cartoons

We all think of Dr. Seuss as a children's author and illustrator. However, for two years, 1941-1943, he was the chief editorial cartoonist for the New York newspaper PM (1940-1948), and for that journal he drew over 400 editorial cartoons, which are now part of the Dr. Seuss Collection in the Mandeville Special Collections Library at the University of California, San Diego. This website makes these cartoons available to all internet users. The cartoons have been scanned from the original newspaper clippings in the UCSD collection. 200 of the 400 total cartoons were analyzed in the book, Dr. Seuss Goes to War by historian Richard H. Minear (The New Press, 1999).

HarpWeek presents “The Presidential Elections: 1860-1912” as a free, public service to provide an informative and entertaining look at a central aspect of the American democratic system of government: the quadrennial political contest for the nation’s highest office. The 14 presidential elections that occurred during this time are represented here and divided into 4 sections, including an overview of that election, an average of 50 cartoons and prints per election all drawn from Harper's Weekly and 18 other leading illustrated periodicals of the day, biographies of the leading political figures involved, and an annotated timeline of important events over the four-year period.
