HED 6501: The Law and Higher Education: Assignment 7

Assignment 7

ALWAYS review the previous reading material assigned (below) if we did not get to it in class.  We will typically begin where we left off with our discussions.

The Student-Institution Relationship (Section 8, pp. 723-900)

Rights and Responsibilities of individual Students (Section 9, pp. 910-1040)

Rights and Responsibilities of Student Organizations and Their Members (Section 10, pp. 1050-1147)

Prior to Wednesday, March 6

Contact me (email, phone or in person) prior to Wednesday, March 6th, to seek approval of the research topic you are considering (see “Research Paper” in the class syllabus located on our Libguide).  Again, I must pre-approve all research topics.

Due 03/21 (Class following Spring Break) – NO CLASS ON 03/07

Prepare a one-page outline of your anticipated research topic.  Include general areas of focus.  This is expected to be a “working outline,” as you will continue to conduct your research and add and/or reorganize your paper until its completion.  As mentioned in class (also, see “Research Paper” mentioned above), your paper should include a well researched and thoroughly developed treatise of your topic including the legal issues (include applicable federal and/or state statutes/regulations), applicable impacts/affects/requirements, and practical ways administrators can avoid becoming embroiled in legal conflicts (“risk management”).  Remember, sources and cases are required, but are not required to be listed in your assigned outline (unless you have already identified some and wish to include).

NOTE:  If students are unable to attend class, all briefs and other written assignments are expected to be sent to me electronically (stanford@mc.edu) on the date that they are due (or turned in by a classmate).
