  • Examples include; student affairs, academic affairs, athletics, business affairs, plant management/operations, etc. Area selected in order to focus or target examples and applications requested in your paper.

Paper Focus:

Your university has determined that staff development is needed for its supervisors. One area of special interest is information pertaining to personnel management; specifically, issues, concepts and laws in which supervisors who manage employees should be aware.

As a professional employed within the area selected, you’ve been asked to prepare a written overview addressing this topic, while addressing specific applications and offering examples that would help targeted readers. Basically, targeted readers should understand the following based on the product you provide:

  1. Applicable laws related to the employer-employee relationship (should also include employer-applicants where applicable as well).
  2. Explanations of how these laws might affect the supervisor (applications), including examples of situations specific to the area selected.
  3. Practical steps that should be taken and/or behaviors that should be avoided (included/covered) that targeted readers should know.

(You are only expected to cover the laws and information which has been covered to date in class, reading assignments, and handouts.)

Paper Specifics:

Your paper should be typed, double spaced, and between 8 and 10 pages. Although laws or parts of laws addressed can be provided as written (cut & pasted), as well as limited information cited by “authorities” (i.e., EEOC), you are expected to use your own words in writing all other material in order to demonstrate your personal understanding. This includes “basic” or practical explanations of a law’s meaning, its impact, examples/applications that you feel would be helpful in the reader’s understanding, and steps to take or behavior to avoid where applicable.

Rubric:

The following rubric will be used in assessing graded for the paper (1/3 of final grade, per syllabus):

20 pts. - Thoroughness of laws covered (inclusion of all addressed, and both details and explanations of the laws themselves).

20 pts. – Appropriateness, applicability and practicality of examples included to help targeted readers’ understanding.
