Research help in the area of Education

Course Description

The purpose of this course is to present various science projects appropriate for grades 3-8 grade classrooms.  These projects support the STEM initiative proposed by the U. S. Department of Education and the National Science Foundation.  On August 9, 2007 the President signed into law H.R. 2272, "the America Competes Act" or "America Creating Opportunities to Meaningfully Promote Excellence in Technology, Education, and Science Activities." Recently developed curriculum frameworks (i.e. national standards) will serve as a backdrop for learning about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in upper elementary and middle school science.  STEM concepts will be used in this course to highlight science project-based learning.  Authentic assessment and evaluation practices will be used in the design, construction, test phase, and completed product of each project.  The role of the upper elementary/middle science teacher as an agent of change will be considered as an important issue of systemic reform in science education.
