Writing Center: Proofreading

A guide to information to help you research and write more effectively.

Reading for Errors

The last step of the writing process before publishing is to proofread your essay for grammar errors and spelling. When dealing with these errors, make sure to check for one type of error at a time paragraph by paragraph.

For example, I could start by checking for comma errors. I would look paragraphy by paragraphy for comma errors, and then, when I had corrected all of those errors, I could move on to the next type of error.

Some errors to look closely for are:

  • Maintaining appropriate verb tense
  • Spelling
  • Incorporating strong active verbs
  • Comma errors
  • Run On Sentences
  • Formatting of the essay
